Friends of Belle-Rivière (FBR) assists the residents of Belle-Rivière, Haiti in the long-term development of their community by meeting basic human needs for food, clean water, health, education, and sustainable commerce. These goals are accomplished through representatives of the community. Projects are prioritized and facilitated by a group of community leaders. FBR seeks to equip this group with organization, perspective, connection, and resource.
Digital Literacy: Complimenting a Ministry of Education initiative, the computer classroom at the community center will be used to facilitate the beginning of a digital literacy program in the 2016-17 school year. Sixth and tenth-grade students from five different B-R schools will attend.
Soccer: Against all odds, Haiti qualified for the Copa America games this year. Luck of the draw pitted their 74th ranked team against Brazil in which Haiti scored a goal against one of the most formidable (and best funded) forces in the soccer world. Almost as unlikely, B-R formed both men's and women's teams since their interest was sparked by a combination of balls provided by the One World Play Project and the availability of a truck for transportation to games. Now the local soccer field is in near constant use by anyone who can find a ball.
